Standard “stock” envelopes are available in a multitude of different sizes, shapes, colors and types of paper. Envelopes can be custom-made to meet specific requirements, although they are expensive in small quantities.
The most popular business envelope size in the USA is a #10 Envelope. They are usually made with a commercial flap (see illustration on the left) and have diagonal or side seams (ideal for machine insertion).
Other commercial envelope options include the wallet flap, square flap and the policy envelope style. Wallet flaps provide a larger imprinting area. Square flaps are contemporary, but are not recommended for machine insertion. Commercial envelopes are most commonly constructed from a 24# white wove paper stock.
All standard commercial envelope sizes with a window have the same window size and position. Measuring 4½″ wide and 1⅛″ deep, the window is positioned on the left-hand side ⅞″ from the left and ½″ from the bottom of the envelope edges.
In addition to the standard #10 size, commercial business envelopes are available in many other Sizes, constructed with a diagonal or side seam on a 24# white wove paper.

Catalog envelopes open on the end (the short way), whereas booklet envelopes open on the top (the longest way). Both are constructed with a center seam, making them suitable for automatic insertion machines and more durable for mailing heavy-weight materials. Paper is usually a 24# or a thicker 28# bond stock. White, manila, gray kraft and brown kraft are standard paper stock color options
